Distraction

Poetry: Rebecca Case

I have this mesmeric desire
to furl my fingers in the
raisin-black cranium maelstroms

artfully and find some promise of
security in the wall of his chest

the rest –
well the rest is irrelevant

curious as it may seem
like the invasion of dreams
commanded by that
nefarious sleep stampeding to
overthrow the vulnerable
mind…

it’s the kind of
half-witted addiction
clueless of what
it’s asking for

perhaps as an infant
it was dropped on its head
or starved of intimacy
in some past life
No, it doesn’t know
what it’s asking for
and I don’t suppose
I’ll tell it
